Situation
A roadmap is not a strategy.
A team lists integrations, mobile improvements, AI summaries, and enterprise reporting for the next year. The list says what it might build, but not whom it intends to serve or why those investments belong together.
Without that reasoning, every attractive request can become another priority.
Mental model
Four different levels of intent.
Vision describes the future you want to help create. Strategy identifies the users, problems, and advantages you will concentrate on. A roadmap communicates intended investments and sequence. A feature is one concrete product capability.
A clear vision can support several strategies. A roadmap should express a chosen strategy rather than substitute for one.
Example
Turn a direction into a bet.
Suppose a scheduling product chooses small service businesses that lose time coordinating repeat appointments. A bet could be that easy rebooking drives repeat use and lowers coordination work.
That suggests saved preferences and simple rescheduling before a broad enterprise permissions system. The feature choice follows the target problem and intended advantage.
Failure case
Calling every opportunity strategic.
“AI is strategic” does not explain the user outcome or why your team can deliver it better. Ask what behavior should change, what evidence supports the bet, and what you will decline to fund.
A strategy that never excludes an attractive option is unlikely to help when resources become scarce.
PM decision
Write the bet so it can be challenged.
“For recurring service businesses, reducing rebooking effort should increase completed repeat bookings. We will test saved preferences before expanding into complex workforce planning.”
Identify the key assumption, a signal of progress, and a review point. If customers do not rebook for reasons outside scheduling, revise the bet.
Remember this
Strategy gives decisions a shared logic.
Explain why this user, this problem, and this investment deserve focus now. The roadmap can change while the underlying logic remains coherent.
