The buried recommendation
A detailed update leaves the decision unclear. · PM Drills · 35 · 30 sec–2 min
The buried recommendation · 30 sec–2 min
Situation
Your launch update begins with six paragraphs of history.
The final sentence says the date should move by two weeks. Leadership responds by asking what you need from them.
Think before scrolling
Rewrite the opening in two sentences.
Lead with the recommendation, its reason, and the concrete ask.
How a strong PM thinks
Put the decision before the supporting narrative.
“Recommend moving the automated launch by two weeks because the required vendor data is unavailable. Please approve the revised date today; the twelve-account manual pilot can still begin Monday with confirmed support coverage.”
Then add the most relevant evidence and risk. Keep the full history available separately rather than making the audience reconstruct the decision.
Takeaway
Lead with what the audience needs to decide.
Concise communication preserves the consequence, rationale, risk, and ask.
