The one-customer bet

A large renewal competes with work that benefits many accounts. · PM Drills · 05 · 30 sec–2 min

The one-customer bet · 30 sec–2 min

Situation

One customer requests a custom integration.

It could protect an important renewal. The same team is scheduled to fix a reliability problem affecting many smaller customers.

Think before scrolling

What makes either priority defensible?

List the evidence you need about commercial risk, reuse, reliability impact, and alternatives.

How a strong PM thinks

Compare the real consequences and timing.

Validate whether the integration truly determines renewal, how much is reusable, and when it is needed. Quantify the reliability problem's scope and cost without dismissing it because affected accounts are small.

Explore a temporary export or assisted workflow. A narrow bridge may preserve the renewal and the reliability work. If not, name the sacrifice and the decision owner explicitly.

Takeaway

Size matters, but it is not the whole strategy.

A good priority decision considers evidence, timing, reuse, and the costs imposed on other customers.
