Situation

The contract depends on manager reporting.

A buyer wants detailed employee activity reporting in a collaboration product. Daily users say they already feel overwhelmed by notifications and monitoring.

Think before scrolling

Whose needs and risks should shape the decision?

Distinguish the buyer, admin, and daily user. What management decision is the requested reporting intended to support?

How a strong PM thinks

Clarify the decision before choosing the data.

Ask whether managers need workload balance, missed deadlines, or individual surveillance. Those goals require different data and create different trust implications.

Explore a report about blocked work or team capacity if that meets the legitimate need. Consult the appropriate privacy and policy owners before defining access and granularity. Commercial importance does not make every requested measurement appropriate.

Takeaway

Separate commercial demand from the user experience.

Make the intended decision, data need, and access boundaries explicit before committing to reporting scope.
